Why Torrox is Dominating Growth in the Axarquía?

Torrox Leads Population Growth in the Axarquía

In the past year, Torrox has stood out as the municipality with the highest population growth in the Axarquía region, adding 432 new residents and reaching a total of 22,015 residents. This increase has contributed to the overall growth of the region, which now has a population of 232,822. However, despite this positive trend, there are strong contrasts between the municipalities. Some towns, such as Iznate and Cútar, have experienced a slight decrease in population, reflecting a phenomenon of depopulation in certain rural areas.

Key Factors Driving Growth in Torrox

The rise of Torrox is partly due to its appeal as a tourist destination on the Costa del Sol. The mayor of Torrox, Óscar Medina, stated that “the increase in our population is a clear indicator that Torrox continues to be a preferred location for both tourists and long-term residents.” Additionally, the municipality has significantly improved its infrastructure and public services, which has enhanced the quality of life for residents and attracted new families and people looking to settle in the area.

Challenges of Depopulation in Other Municipalities

Despite the growth in Torrox, other municipalities in the Axarquía are facing the challenge of depopulation. Towns like Iznate and Cútar, which have fewer infrastructures and services, have experienced a gradual loss of population. This phenomenon, which mainly affects rural areas, highlights the need for development policies that promote population retention and attract new job opportunities, especially for younger generations.

Impact on the Local Economy

Torrox’s population growth has a direct impact on the local economy, boosting sectors such as real estate, commerce, and services. However, this population increase also presents challenges, such as the need to adapt infrastructures to ensure that growth does not compromise the quality of life for residents.

Moreover, the contrast between more tourist-oriented municipalities and rural areas emphasizes the importance of balanced development that benefits all towns in the region.
